Moderator: Dr Mark Mattner

Dr. Mark Mattner heads the GIZ Sector Program “Peace and Security, Disaster Risk Management”, based in Berlin. In this capacity, he advises the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development on peacebuilding and security issues. Until September 2017, he was based in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he managed the GIZ Regional Resource Governance Program for West Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire).

Prior to joining GIZ, Mark was a Conflict Specialist with the World Bank’s Conflict Prevention and Reconstruction Team and a Visiting Researcher at the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University in New York City. His doctoral research as Trudeau Scholar at McGill University was on violence and oil production in the Niger Delta, where he conducted qualitative fieldwork in oil-bearing communities.
