Dr Hibo Yassin Haji Yussuf

IIDA Women's Development Organization

Dr Hibo Yassin is a distinguished human rights advocate with an impressive track record of over 34 years of experience in designing, implementing, and managing development programs in Africa, particularly in Somalia. As a founding member of IIDA, a Somali women-led NGO, she has been actively involved in promoting women's and gender rights throughout her career. Hibo's work centers on addressing women and gender issues in conflict-sensitive contexts, where she plays a crucial role in crisis prevention, conflict management, peacebuilding, and women's empowerment initiatives. She leads state-building efforts through the Somali Social Contract Programme, aligning them with national development plans and Sustainable Development Goals. Hibo has supported the Somali Federal Government in developing laws, policies, and guidelines for the new state architecture, contributing significantly to the ratification of important conventions and the development of action plans. The recent passing of the law against female genital mutilation for the Federal Member State of Galmudug represents one of the most important successes in Hibo's career to date. Hibo led the team that drafted the law and lobbied for its passage, implementing a Somali-led and inspired low profile high impact model.
